Two teams from 5th and 6th class took part in the second primary schools badminton competition in Baldoyle badminton centre on Wednesday 7th of March. The teams were selected after training sessions and competitions throughout the year. On the day of competition boys and girls played in separate groups. Each group consisted of four pools and, within each pool teams played four matches.
The girls, Blaithín Flood, Caoimhe McEnerney, Molly Haughton, Lauren Quirke and Fiona Finnegan first played St. Michael's NS. The girls gave it their best but the much stronger St Michael's went on to win the match 21-1 and 21-5. The girls played well against their second and third opponents Kilcredan Swans and St Colmcille's NS taking a number of points in both games. The final match against Rafeigh NS was a closely contested affair with the girls almost taking a win with scores of 21-18 and 21-16, alas Rafeigh were the victors. The boys, Dylan Boylan, Michael Donohoe, Caolan Collins, Thristan Lyons and Jack Smith first played Kilcredan Eagles. The boys came close to earning a draw but the Eagles came out on top with scores of 21-7 and 21-20. In the second match the boys got their draw winning their first match 21-11 and losing a tightly contested second 18-21. The third match against Lyre NS saw the boys produce a determined display taking a victory with score 21-13 and 21-18. In the final match against St Colmcille's NS the boys put in a valiant effort but were unable to seal another victory. Both teams did the school proud with their effort, determination and great sporting manner which was noted by other schools on the day. Perhaps we have the next Chloe Magee or Scott Evans in our midst. |
