About Us
St. Mary’s National School is a six teacher primary school situated in the beautiful countryside of Crosserlough in Co. Cavan. The school was built in 1981 as a 4 teacher school. It developed over the years and due to an increase in pupils attending a new extension was built onto the school in 2004.
The school caters for the full range of classes from Junior Infants to sixth class. It is an inclusive school and caters for children of all abilities. There are 4 mainstream class teachers, including the principal and 2 special education needs teachers. A Special Needs Assistant is assigned to the school by the Department of Education and Science to enable the inclusion of certain children with special education needs. There is one full time school secretary and one full time cleaner employed in St. Mary's National School.
Our school is recognised as a digital school since 2016 when we received the digital schools of distinction award. ICT plays a strategic role in the everyday lives of the school and wider school community. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive white board, a projector and teaching laptops. Fibre broadband was installed in 2020. Every child in our school has access to a samsung galaxy tablet or an ipad which they use throughout the school day alongside their text books to make learning fun.
We are very proud of our sporting achievements and encourage pupils to reach their full potential in their chosen sport be it gaelic football, soccer, basketball, athletics and camogie. The senior pupils are timetabled to have access to table tennis and badminton during breaks. Our school community has worked towards achieving an Active School's Flag and our school continues to promote a healthy lifestyle for pupils and staff by continuing to implement targets in our Health Promoting Schools Initiative.
In the past our school participated in the Creative Schools Initiative which aims to put the arts and creativity at the heart of children's lives. By working with artists in the local and wider community the staff acquire new skills to empower the pupils in our school to develop their creativity.
