Science:
This week we are looking at more minibeasts.Minibeasts are small animals that do not have a skeleton. They live all around us in many different places.
Ladybird:It is a small, round flying beetle. It hibernates in the winter.A ladybird has 6 legs.It has 2 antennae, which allow it to touch, taste and smell. It has black spots on its body. Its body is really a shell that protects two pairs of delicate wings.Aphids(greenfly) are small garden pests that eat the leaves of some flowers.Ladybirds eat the aphids. The female lays her eggs on the underside of a leaf, near aphids so her babies will have food when they hatch.
Spider:Spiders are arachnids, not insects. They have 8 legs and up to 8 eyes(4 pairs). They hatch from eggs. They have fangs. They usually eat other spiders and insects. They spin webs using the silk from their spinnerets.Webs are made to catch insects to eat.
Woodlouse:It has 14 legs.It doesn't like sunlight. It comes out at night and likes to live in rotting wood.
Caterpillar:This is a baby butterfly.Caterpillars eat the leaves of pIants. It will eat until its skin gets too tight and then it will shed it.It has 8 pairs of legs and 12 eyes. Some caterpillars are poisonous and birds do not like to eat them.
Fly:A female can lay over 3000 eggs in her lifetime. She often lays her eggs on food.A fly lives for 21 days.It has no teeth.
Ant:It lives in a group called a colony. There can be millions of ants in a colony. They are hard workers. The queen ant lays the eggs and some of the other ants act as soldiers to protect her.
Snail:It can turn its eyes inside out to protect them.It is slow moving and leaves behind a trail of slime. It is most active at night.
Bee:A bee can only sting once and then it dies.It is the only insect that produces food that people eat, honey.Bees talk to each other by dancing.
Butterfly:It eats nectar from flowers. It has 2 pairs of wings. Some butterflies have markings on their wings to scare birds away.
